Senior-Proof Your Phone in 10 Minutes

8 simple settings that make any smartphone easier, safer, and more comfortable to use — starting today.

Most smartphones come out of the box set up for a 25-year-old. The text is tiny, the buttons are small, and the screen seems to do things on its own. No wonder so many seniors feel frustrated!

The good news is that every smartphone has hidden settings that make it much easier to use — and most people never know they exist. In just 10 minutes, you can transform your phone into something that feels like it was made just for you.

"Your phone should work for you — not the other way around. These settings put you back in control."

1

🔤 Make the Text Bigger

Squinting at tiny text is one of the most common complaints seniors have about smartphones. Here is how to fix it in seconds:

On iPhone:

Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size → drag the slider to the right

On Android (Samsung):

Settings → Display → Font Size and Style → drag the slider to the right

2

☀️ Brighten the Screen

A dim screen makes everything harder to read, especially outdoors. Turn up the brightness so everything is crisp and clear.

On iPhone:

Settings → Display & Brightness → drag the Brightness slider to the right. Also turn on Auto-Brightness so it adjusts automatically in sunlight.

On Android:

Settings → Display → Brightness → drag the slider to the right. Enable Adaptive Brightness to let the phone adjust automatically.

3

🔊 Turn Up the Volume & Ringtone

Missing calls because you could not hear the phone ring is a common frustration. Here is how to make sure you never miss an important call again.

On iPhone:

Settings → Sounds & Haptics → drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider all the way to the right. Also, make sure the small switch on the left side of your phone is not set to silent — it should not show an orange stripe.

On Android:

Settings → Sounds and Vibration → Ringtone Volume → drag to the right. Choose a loud, simple ringtone that is easy to hear in any room.

4

⏱️ Stop the Screen Turning Off Too Fast

Does your screen keep going dark while you are reading something? That is the Auto-Lock setting, turning the screen off to save battery. You can give yourself more time before it goes dark.

On iPhone:

Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock → change to 2 minutes or longer

On Android:

Settings → Display → Screen Timeout → change to 2 minutes or longer

5

🎤 Use Your Voice Instead of Typing

Typing on a small screen is difficult for many seniors — especially with arthritis. Here is a secret: you do not have to type at all. On any keyboard, look for a small microphone button and tap it. Then just speak your message out loud, and the phone will type it for you automatically.

💡 Pro Tip:

You can also ask Siri (iPhone) or Google Assistant (Android) to send messages for you entirely by voice. Just say "Hey Siri, send a text to Mary saying I will call you after lunch" — and it does it for you without touching the phone at all.

6

🆘 Set Up Emergency SOS

This is one of the most important settings on any phone — and most people never set it up. Emergency SOS lets you call for help quickly without having to unlock your phone or find a contact.

On iPhone:

Settings → Emergency SOS → turn on Call with Side Button. Then add your emergency contacts under the Health app → Medical ID. In an emergency, press and hold the side button and either volume button together.

On Android:

Settings → Safety and Emergency → Emergency SOS → turn it on and add your emergency contacts. Press the power button 5 times quickly to trigger it.

7

📵 Block Spam Calls

Tired of constant robocalls and scam calls? Your phone has a built-in way to silence unknown callers so only people in your contacts can ring through.

On iPhone:

Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers → turn it on. Calls from numbers not in your contacts go straight to voicemail. Legitimate callers will leave a message.

On Android:

Open the Phone app → tap the three dots in the corner → Settings → Blocked Numbers → turn on Unknown Callers.

8

🏠 Simplify Your Home Screen

A cluttered home screen full of apps you never use makes your phone feel overwhelming. Pare it down to just the apps you actually need — Phone, Messages, Camera, and a few favorites — and move everything else off the main screen.

On iPhone:

Press and hold any app until they all wiggle. Tap the minus (-) button on apps you do not use to remove them from the home screen. They stay on your phone — they just move to the App Library.

On Android (Samsung):

Press and hold any app → tap Remove from Home. Or go to Settings → Display → Easy Mode for a simplified layout with larger icons designed specifically for seniors.

💡 Pro Tip:

Ask a grandchild to help you set up the home screen just the way you like it. Make the icons for Phone and FaceTime extra large so they are impossible to miss.
